News Slavery homework for 3rd graders!!!

    Post by wants2laugh Sun Jan 08, 2012 3:04 am

This is absolutely disgusting, and the damn principal and superintendent should be fired!!!

Third graders in in Gwinnett County, Ga., were given math homework Wednesday that asked questions about slavery and beatings.

Christopher Braxton told ABC News affiliate WSB-TV in Atlanta that he couldn't believe the assignment his 8-year-old son brought home from of Beaver Ridge Elementary school in Norcross.

"It kind of blew me away," Braxton said. "Do you see what I see? Do you really see what I see? He's not answering this question."

The question read, "Each tree had 56 oranges. If eight slaves pick them equally, then how much would each slave pick?"

Another math problem read, "If Frederick got two beatings per day, how many beatings did he get in one week?"

Another question asked how many baskets of cotton Frederick filled.

"I was furious at that point," Braxton said.

"This outrages me because it just lets me know that there's still racists," said Stephanie Jones, whose child is a student at the school.

"Something like that shouldn't be imbedded into a kid of the third, fourth, fifth, any grade," parent Terrance Barnett told WSB-TV. "I'm having to explain to my 8-year-old why slavery or slaves or beatings are in a math problem. That hurts."

"In this one, the teachers were trying to do a cross-curricular activity," Gwinnett County school district spokeswoman Sloan Roach said.

Roach said the teachers were attempting to incorporate social studies into math problems.

"We understand that there are concerns about these questions, and we agree that these questions were not appropriate," she said.

Oh I would definitely be attending that school asking the teachers if we have one ton of tar and 500,000 feathers, how many teachers can we coat with them?

Well it seems that the epidemic of teachers with NO intelligence running schools is not just limited to my hometown, contrary to what some people would like to believe.

It's Georgia. Not surprised. Somebody would be getting fired though.

This isn't like Jaime Escalante's 3 gigalos and 6 girlfriends scenario?

Yeah, it's Georgia so why are we surprised? BAck in 1986 when I worked for Vision Quest, they had a covered wagon train that traveled from Reading PA to Ocachobee Florida in the fall and back north in the spring.

For those who may not know, Vison Quest is an alternative adolescent rehabilitation program designed to take kids from a lengthy adult prison sentences to wilderness accountability. It is primarily urban youth, many African American.

Anyway, one year coming through Georgia in the early 1980's, there was trouble. It started with a series of being run off the road and several mustang horses being sideswiped that had the urban youth riding on the horses in "scout" positions.

A few days later, the camp awoke to burning crosses and 3-5 dead mustangs--all shot in the head. Because the mustangs were the wild horses from Arizona, the deaths had to be reported to the federal authorities.

At day break, Georgia state troppers escorted the wagon train through the rest of Georgia. As far as I know, the wagon train still goes around Georgia to this day to avoid problems.

It is entirely shitty that anyone teaching children thinks that assignment was ok.

    Update:

'Slavery' Math Problems Fallout Prompts Ga. Teacher To Resign

Slavery homework for 3rd graders!!! R-WORKSHEET-large570

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- A spokeswoman says a suburban Atlanta teacher has resigned after an investigation over third-grade students being assigned math homework with word problems about slavery.

One of the problems read: "Each tree has 56 oranges. If eight slaves pick them equally, then how much would each slave pick?"

Another was: "If Frederick got two beatings each day, how many beatings did he get in one week?"

Gwinnett County schools spokeswoman Sloan Roach said Wednesday an investigation has concluded into four teachers who gave out the assignments at Beaver Ridge Elementary. She says the school system accepted the resignation of one teacher but declined to elaborate on the rest.

Parents were angered by the math problems, and the NAACP had called for teachers to be fired.
