As a child, were you ever afraid to be in certain areas of the house alone? If so, why? What did you think would happen?

When I was 6 I was afraid to go up to my room at night for bed because I was convinced that the Bat was up there waiting to kill me.

I was afraid of the cellar for two reasons. One, as a kid I watched a movie about a family hiding in a cellar during a twister, and my over-active mind started thinking about "big things" falling onto the doors and trapping people in them. Second, my dad had to kill a good-sized snake that he found down there. But it didn't stop anyone else ~ that's where the wine barrels were kept.

I wasn't afraid of our basement, just of going down the steps, they were the board steps and I always worried I might fall through them.

Hell yeah, our house was so big we had an intercom system. After watching my Looney Toons cartoons at night in the basement, I would cut everything off and try to fly up two flights of stairs to my bedroom!

I had to read that a couple of times, when you mentioned the intercom system I thought you were talking about the cartoons where Bugs Bunny was in the gangster's hideout and would run the phone down to them at night and whisper in their ears that each was going to kill the other one.

Yep. There were a few years when I didn't like to be in any part of the house alone, particularly the basement. I remember being a kid and it being nighttime....we'd be all be upstairs getting ready for bed....and suddenly one of my parents would send me downstairs for something. The downstairs was all dark. Used to freak me out to have to venture into it alone.

Places we've lived in were never big, but I do remember being scared from flushing the toilet in the middle of the night, going back to my bedroom.
