    ....and the deceased is not someone you were close to, do you have the right words?

    This has not happened to me often. But when it has, I feel so awkward showing sympathy.

    It all seems fake because I did not adore the deceased.

    I find it difficult to say anything at funerals even if I did know the person. If I didn't know them I would feel relieved that I wouldn't be expected to say anything.

    "I didn't know them that well" is about it. Actually, when my son-in-laws mother died, whom I had met over the years they gave me a pass not to even attend the funeral because we weren't close at all.

    Its difficult to chose the right words but I would normally say I am sorry for your loss if I can comfort you or help you in any way I am here for you.
