You can't pick both and porn films don't count. Which of these two do you prefer seeing in movies?

    Violence.

Violence merely because I feel it can be used to further a moral end a lot more easily than sex can. Sex is generally there to arouse whereas violence can tell an important part of somebody's harrowing story. Plus, a story is a lot better off with suggesting that two people had sex offscreen than suggesting that a main character met a violent end offscreen. IMO, violence has much more purpose than sex.

Exactly, violence is often relevant to the storyline, more so than sex is. Take the movie Highlander, it's about people who cut each other's heads off...it had one sex scene, and the movie could have done without it, and DOES do without it when it shows on TV, but the movie could NOT do without the killings and the fighting.

I agree that violence probably serves more of a point in films than sex does. Sex is usually just aesthetic, while the violence tends to either go with the theme of the film, or highlights the personality of the character(s).

    Sounds brutal! lol Razz

Now I don't deny that many movies are unnecessarily violent too, or that sex cannot possibly serve a place in a film. But on average, I definitely think violence has more purpose in terms of story.

Sex. It's crazy to me that a movie with extreme graphic violence, ending in death gets an "R" rating...but porn gets an "X". Why is sex worse than violence?

Because violence is fake in the movies: latex, theater blood, blank rounds, false guns, but in porn the sex is real.

I can't see how people cannot make this distinction either. It's clearly different cases.

Besides, death can further a story way more than a roll in the hay can. Sex is purely for arousal purposes; violence can have a place in telling somebody's story. It's just so different.

Of course, if the former is what you're going for, I imagine you'd pick sex. Those looking for a well-told story would probably choose the latter. Wink

I guess I have to agree that violence is usually more effective in moving a plot along.
