Watership Down was a children's book that was made into a movie in 1978. It an animated film, but it was gross and scary. Its starts out with this weak, small psychic rabbit who tries to warn the rabbit community that death is coming. He tells them that they must leave.. and a group of them believe him. After they leave, human construction crews start filling in the rabbit holes suffocating the bunnies that remained. Along the journey to find a new home, they must travel thru "Nazi" bunny territory. Honest... it is gross cause the bad rabbit kill and tear apart other rabbits, claws them with blood all over.. and one rabbit gets caught with a wire around his neck and is near death. In the end, the bad rabbits, lead by "the general" fight with the good rabbits. The very last line says something like "remember children, if you misbehave, the general will get you" WTF kinda shit is that to show a kid???

Not the whole movie maybe but certain scenes. Like when Bambi's mother gets shot. Most people report being scared of the flying monkeys in The Wizard of Oz but I always thought they were cool. It was that black and white tornado in the beginning that scared the hell out of me. Oh, and Old Yeller!

Yeah, Uncle Walt put out some scary, downer stuff. Bambi's mother got shot and the boy had to shoot his own beloved dog who saved his life.
Set us up to be a morbid generation who would listen to songs like 'Teen Angel' & 'Tell Laura I Love Her.'

nah... this was unlike any flying monkey bullshit.... and old yeller was a sad movie... Born free too... but this was traumatizing... it actually made No. 2 on the list of most traumatizing kids movies...
i dont know how dark crystal didnt... its jim henson muppets.. and guess what ... as a kid it was scary
And The Ringing Bell 1978--- that is something supernova would be interested in... it starts off really childlike, and becomes soooo depressing that I cried the whole second half.. not from fear but sadness.

Well, I've never seen the movie that W2L mentions. But I was a pretty hardy kid when it came to scary movies. I was a farm kid ~ I seen plenty where animals behaviors go ~ some cruel, some funny.

The original "War of the Worlds" that came out in the 50's scared the heck out of me. I had nightmares from it.

I thought the Night on Bald Mountain segment in Fantasia was at least as cool as the flying monkeys.

The Brave Little Toaster (1987) was a favorite of my daughter and me. Nothing like rabbits tearing each other apart but it had some darker moments. Never seemed to bother her though.

I just watched that today - great movie and it still holds up after half a century. I saw that in theater when I was about 9. It was kinda scary then but I really enjoyed it. I was really into it because when I saw the DVD after all these years it was exactly as I remembered it.Minerva wrote:The original "War of the Worlds" that came out in the 50's scared the heck out of me.
