One of my peeves is seeing kids (toddlers, babies, school age, etc) out in public without shoes. Even during hot weather. It irks me when I'm in line at some store and somebody brings in their barefooted baby. It's always mothers too. When my twins were babies, their mother would be flagrant about taking them places without shoes....while I would always demand they had them on when I took them out with me.

Re: Kids w/o Shoes
Out in public, school age children should definitely wear shoes. Babies can get away with it if its really hot out.....but I would at least put them on some socks.

You'd be surprise at how easily an eighteen month old can lose a shoe in public.

As a kid I liked the idea of it because I hated wearing shoes, but I could never get away with going around outside barefoot unless we'd just gotten out of the pool. I know a kid who willingly goes barefoot a lot and nothing he steps on seems to bother him, I envy him his tough feet.

In St. Louis I can't remember going outside barefoot, but when visiting Mississippi it was almost expected. In fact they joked about me being unable to walk on gravel roads and stickers in the fields. But after a few weeks my tenderfeet would toffen up. Cowshit squishing between your toes was kinda sensual.

I don't think babies who are not yet walking age need shoes in warm weather. But once they are standing and walking, shoes should be on.

Re: Kids w/o Shoes
I am not too excited about barefoot kids. The first thing that my mom and I noticed about sarah palin when she and her family walked on stage when mccain introduced her at the first time was that the baby was barefoot--- not even socks. Yes it was august, but still.
When I was about 8yrs old, I remember running through the park and a large nail went through my sneaker and was stuck in my foot--- omg the pain. I had to hobble home with the thing through my shoe. So when I see bare foot kids I think: nails, glass, hookworm, even sea shells. My sis's family in hawaii is always barefoot
