It would go on for one statement.
I once bot a year's Internet ISP for my daughter with a lump sum on my debit card and was surprised to see it reactivated after the year was up. Apparently there was a hidden clause that they could continue using my card past that year. I had it turned off and now watch for that.

A few times I've looked at my statements and wondered where a certain charge was coming from, but it never went on long enough for me not to notice. I will always catch it.
