Child prodigies...your thoughts? Empty Child prodigies...your thoughts?

Personally, I feel sorry for people who are child prodigies because for them to be as good as they are at what they do, they basically have to have no life, all their spare time has to be devoted to improving whatever it is they do that makes them so great. And who wants a life like that?

In your description, I agree. However, if they are really prodigies and not just overworked, I feel they can probably get better without devoting as much time to it, hence the prodigy. They can just sit down at a piano and play Beethoven with minimal studying.(Just an example. I know all are not musical prodigies) So I guess it depends on the prodigy.

I don't think it is a stretch to assume that most actually enjoy what it is they are excelling in. If they enjoy it, and it may take them somewhere in life, I am all for them maximizing the talent.

Yeah but I'm willing to bet most of them start having to devote all their time to it before they find out if they'd rather be having a normal life. After all, everybody encourages get your kid started on things young while they can still learn everything quick, not like older kids or adults where some of them just aren't going to get it and others are going to take a long time for it to sink in.

^^^^I do see your point, and I do agree to a point. I just feel like it doesn't HAVE to be that way. Just because a child is a prodigy doesn't mean they can't live a normal life as well.

I think child prodigies tend to have a passion for whatever their craft is and because of that they are usually willing to devote a sizable amount of their free time to honing it.

Hey....in order to refine your natural talent, you gotta be willing to give it precedence in your life.

Natural talent is overrated, especially when people start figuring practice the hell out of it to make it perfect and make a profit off it. Look at what happened to Michael Jackson, who would wish that kind of life on anybody? And I seriously doubt all these 10 year old professional pianists and such that go on talk shows and show the whole world what they can do, do it just for the fun of it.

Well, Supernova, I have to say that my son does not fit at all into the prodigy role. But he excels in his sport, a couple years ago, being top five in the world. He would not have it any other way than to have been trained in the manner he has been trained and the exposure he has had. In fact, he only reflects on missed opportunities. He strives to excel. And, like I said, he is in no way a prodigy. He is just dedicated to a sport that his dedication has equated to excellence.

Not every youth that excels at something suffers the stringent lifestyle that MJ did.

Not many 10 year olds can do what a 10 year exceptionally gifted pianist can do. If a child shows a exceptional ability and talent in something....it would be quite foolish to encourgae them NOT to hone it. And I would never condone what Papa Joe did to MJ in terms of the way he was treated....but if it weren't for him, you wouldn't know who Michael Jackson is. He recognized the talent in his son and gave it to the world to see.

co-signs Joshua Waitzkin (Searching for Bobby Fischer) is a good example of this.
