What's your opinion on online dating sites? Do you commonly rely on them for meeting new people and has it been generally a good or bad experience for you (if you do)?


Just wondering.

Rarely, after several bad experiences, though I never actually met anyone. There are some pretty crazy people on those sites - got turned off one after Ihad several guys my Dad's age contact me, when I specificied the age range I was looking for. One had the nerve to get offended when I old him that I was looking for someone close to my own age. He was under the mistaken impression that I'd be in love with him just because he sent me a message. There were several guys on that site who were like that and it creeped me out for the longest time.

Have a friend who's pretty addicted to them and is desperate to find a husband but I think it's that desperation that drives guys off. None of the guys she's met have on there have really worked out.

I've known a few people who've met people on dating sites and it's worked out, but I find them to be pretty expensive for the most part and the free ones seem to bring out the freaks.

I haven't messed with them. They sound honestly creepy.

Have not done it yet, I have friends that do and they seem to like it.

Though I am not single, if I was, I might try them out. I am sure that there is as much trial and error as meeting people in bars, if not more.


I have heard enough success stories from people I know to think they are totally useless sites.

Signed up for a couple before, but never actually met anyone from one of them. (Back during the chat room fad though, I did.)

Ditto. Never from a dating site, but I used to meet a bunch of hookup's from AOL chatrooms.

Yeah - I've met people through chatrooms, message boards, etc. but never a dating site, though the people I met were friends, not interested in dating - just friends who shared a common interest.

I the chatroom = yes/dating site = no proclaim. Dating sites are too tedious to bother with IMO. You make a generic little "describe yourself" profile, then forget all about it for about six months to year. Since chatrooms on the other hand were LIVE interaction, it was more of a given you'd meet somebody from them.

Me too. Chatrooms didn't seem quite as desperate or stagnant. Dating sites are a little too much like trying, IMO.

Yeah - ITA Chris. The first dating site I was on was actually 'cause of a dare - a friend and I dared each other to sign up. She's pretty desperate and is still using them but I got bored.

Yeah, I've met a few people from the chat rooms. Waaay back in the day. I never made a habit of it, but one of my very good friends to this day I met from AOL back in '98. Remember this: a/s/l?


As far as dating sites, I guess it would depend on how desperate you are. I don't think I'd ever do it, but I don't look down on people who try them. If you have any common sense, it doesn't hurt I guess.
