Be honest. I will admit that the majority of my iPod contents are of illegally downloaded music.

I used to but I try to be honest now. If I like music, I buy it. I feel it the right thing to do. The only time I really make any exception is when record labels start screwing with me and making one song unavailable to everybody, or you gotta buy the album again to get it. OR you tell me about this release after I pre-ordered the album without bonuses. It pisses me off with record labels do that. So I'll do it only if the song is not available for purchase(without jumping through hoops). I want to support artists but if the labels make it impossible to do, than I gotta go with what I am given.
Now, I am not against putting songs and movies(tv shows) on Youtube. The quality is crap anyway so if people want the stuff in good quality, they'll buy it. But I consider Youtube a method of free advertising and I cannot for the life of me understand why anyone would be against it. Oh yeah, people can steal the music, just like they can record it from the radio but I don't see campaigns shouting that radio stations playing a song are pirates. So Youtube haters need to wake up.

I don't download music or movies for free. I have DJ friends and I'm usually given promo copies of a lot of stuff, but if there is music that I want to have I just buy it. If there are artists out there that you really like, I believe in supporting them, instead of trying to do everything you can to get their music for free. That's my way of showing support and wanting them to keep on doing what they do.
As far as movies, no if there is a movie that I really want, I'll just buy it. I don't do bootlegs. As a matter of principle, I don't support thieves.
BTW, that's not a morality thing

I look to pay first, but if some oldie or obscure remix that I want isn't available for sale at iTunes/Amazon, but is at some underground rapidshare-supported blog, then yes ma'am.

I'm too poor to buy my music.
99% of my movies and music are pirated.

That's a different scenario. I have no problems with that at all!

I rarely buy physical CD's anymore, but I will if it's an artist that I really like. Maxwell, Outkast, Jill Scott, MJ (before he passed), Robin Thicke, Buju Banton, Sizzla and very few others can get me to buy their album. But let's face it, people download music for free because you're wasting your money buying an album and only liking 2 or 3 songs....if that. And I think the notion that you're not supporting the artist is crap because THEY aren't making any damn money from the album sales anyway. The records labels are. You think I care about some prob. corrupt and greedy record label? To me, it shouldn't matter HOW someone gets your music as long as they get it cause if they like it, more likely than not they would want to catch your show and would spend the money to see you perform. And THAT'S where artists make their money. From tours, not album sales. So they still support you even if you don't buy the album. I don't do the bootlegs either, I'll buy a DVD/Blu-ray for my collection, I download movies solely for my iPod.

Maybe some of you saw this:
Whiskey Tango Foxtrot?! I can see where artists should be protected but to be a deterrent the fine needs to be something that hurts but cut me a fucking break. Do they think they're going to collect anywhere near this or was this just supposed to "send a message"?
A federal jury Thursday found a 32-year-old Minnesota woman guilty of illegally downloading music from the Internet and fined her $80,000 each -- a total of $1.9 million -- for 24 songs.
Jammie Thomas-Rasset's case was the first such copyright infringement case to go to trial in the United States, her attorney said.
Attorney Joe Sibley said that his client was shocked at the fine, noting that the price tag on the songs she downloaded was 99 cents.
She plans to appeal, he said.
Cara Duckworth, a spokeswoman for the Recording Industry Association of America, said the association was "pleased that the jury agreed with the evidence and found the defendant liable."
"We appreciate the jury's service and that they take this as seriously as we do," she said.
Thomas-Rasset downloaded work by artists such as No Doubt, Linkin Park, Gloria Estefan and Sheryl Crow.
This was the second trial for Thomas-Rasset. The judge ordered a retrial in 2007 after there was an error in the wording of jury instructions.
The fines jumped considerably from the first trial, which granted just $220,000 to the recording companies.
Thomas-Rasset is married with four children and works for an Indian tribe in Minnesota.

Obviously it is targeting those heathens because no Christian would steal. It is one of their holy commandments.

If I really adore an artist, I go to the awesome music store and physically buy it. Otherwise, I "borrow" it.

The Christian lawmakers got much more important things to worry about than targeting illegal downloads. This is a secular law pure and simple.Shale wrote:Obviously it is targeting those heathens because no Christian would steal. It is one of their holy commandments.
80K a song is a bit ridiculous. I think the only message that's gonna send is that the record labels really are greedy SOBs after all. It's not going to help their case.
We need sites like Guvera to expand their library. With them, you really got no excuse to illegal download cause you can get free music and have somebody else foot the bill.

I'll say the same thing I did back in the late 90s and early 00s, when illegal downloading was at its peak....put more music in stores (for example, singles), and I won't bother to steal it....as much.

It's dumb as hell is what it is. They have a point, $80,000 for a 99 cent song? Is that just lawyer math or what? It's like when Napster first became illegal and they were arresting 12 year olds and fining them $100,000, they're not going to have that kind of money so what's the point?

I do find it ironic that record labels want to bitch about illegal downloads hurting them but they go out of their way to stick it to people who buy music legally by making some songs unavailable to be legally purchases by itself, or by raising the price of songs, or w/e. Most artists don't benefit from music sales anyway, it's just to make them marketable to the labels.Marc™ wrote:I'll say the same thing I did back in the late 90s and early 00s, when illegal downloading was at its peak....put more music in stores (for example, singles), and I won't bother to steal it....as much.
So while I am against illegal downloading, I think this war against it is hypocritical and one-sided.

Think about it, if people HAD $80,000 to pay per song, they wouldn't need to pirate it.

That's exactly why I started pirating music in the first place. Record labels stopped releasing singles and wanted consumers to buy the whole fucking CD. Nah we're not doing that. When they realized that the public's hands couldn't be forced, that's when they got into bed with iTunes and Amazon and that's annoying too because I don't like having to set up online accounts with my credit card. This is why music sales are at an all time low, the industry shot themselves in the foot. If i could head to the record store like back in '98 and pick up a CD single of a song I like that's playing on the radio, I would.

Music, guilty.
Movies, no.
On the real, I don't care for a bunch of media files taking up space on my drive. It is the drawback of having an iPod, you have to store those mp3s in order to keep re-charging/re-syncing it.
