Say if your 16 or 17 year old son or daughter wanted to get married right then and there to their BF/GF....and needed you to sign the consent form....would you?

Hell to the nah. He/she can wait until they were 18 if they were that adamant about it.....and I'm pretty sure by the time they were 18, they'd have a change of heart.

Absolutely not. There isn't a sixteen or seventeen year old on the planet who is mature enough to handle marriage. Let 'em be mad, let 'em resent you. Hell, let 'em run off and elope on their 18th birthday, while claiming to hate you. They'll be back when the marriage fails.

Hell no. Why would I be an accomplice to my child ruining their life by throwing away everything on a spouse?

Just curious Supernova. Does that mean you dodn't support the idea of marriage at all?

I wouldn't go that far but I do believe a person has to learn to live by themself and do things as ONE person before they marry somebody and then every decision has to be made between two of them: there's no spur of the moment thing anymore, two schedules have to work out instead of just one, and, if a person goes right from living at home with their parents and having them be a deciding factor in most things the person does, then goes straight into marriage so has a spouse also telling them things to do and is a deciding factor in everything, what's going to happen then when that person becomes widowed in 40 years and has never learned how to live alone? My family is very familiar with people who have done that, never had to take care of themselves, first had their parents to help them, then a husband, and when they're 70 or 80 and alone for the first time, it's never pretty.

OK, thanks. As I said, I was just curious. I do think it's a good idea for a person to be self sufficient. I definetly think marriage should be a true partnership where both partners can do each other's jobs.

There's no way and I don't understand any parent who allows themselves to be browbeat into consenting to letting their kid get married underage.

No and if either of my daughters dared to even ask me for such a thing, I'd end their relationships. They can get married when I'm dead.

No, I would not let him do that ever. There is plenty of time for marriage and 95% of people are not experienced or mature enough to marry at that age.

There's no way I would let any underage child of mine get married. They'd be a fool to even bother asking such a thing.
