What's the point? If you want to be married, get married.

Yeah I don't get it either. If you REAAALLY love the person you're with and want to spend your life with them, then why are you sooooooo incapable of making it official? Nobody's saying have a big white wedding or a church wedding, you can do it in the court house for crying out loud, very simple, no muss, no fuss, and if something happens to either one of you, the other one doesn't have to wonder 'has enough time passed that the law will recognize ME as the immediate family instead of their mother'?

Re: Common law marriages
I am not married, but in all respects together for years to my son's father, and I know that if I ever want to reap the benefits of marriage, then I would get married.
What I am not a fan of is if something major happens to him, I don't really know how much say I would have. It is something that we should really detail again, because last time we discussed it, I was fine with him willing all of his business equipment to his brother. Now, I am older and wiser, and see that I should really be able to liquidate most of it to provide for my son.
But, in general, common law unions should not be recognized for things like insurance benefits because if somebody desires that, then they should/could just marry.
