We had two other dogs, have a dog and a cat now, and in 10 years or whenever when my current dog dies, I don't want to get another one, I'm becoming more of a cat person.

Right now there are more pets in the house than I have brain cells. Dog, cats, turtles, guinea pigs, hamsters, hedgehogs, scorpions, tarantulas & a rabbit. There were birds but my son recently sold those so it's a bit quieter at least.

I had a dog once who lived to old age but in his last year very suddenly got very sick; developing heart problems, he ultimately had to be put to sleep. He was the only pet I ever had, but I am contemplating getting another one (dog or cat) next year.

I had a cat, but she did not adjust when my son was born, so now she lives at my parents. My son has had a guinea pig, and she passed from old age. We tried birds for a year and despite a lot of research and forethought, we were not a bird family. So, we sold them.
Now, we have one dog and he is the best little guy on the planet.

When I was a kid, we had Tabby the cat and my mom later got Tina her first Chihuahua. Personally, I had rodents, either white mice or hamsters. We had a guinea pig for a while too.
I also had a wild mouse that my dad caught - but I could only play with it in the bathtub, which it couldn't jump out of. They are faster than white mice.
As an adult, I loosely had cats in New Orleans. They came with the apartment and when we moved the next apartment renter got them. That is about it. I kept rodents in the '80s one white mouse and one gerbil.
My last mouse:
I would like to get a rat but the prob is who would take care of it when I went out of town. Not like getting someone to look after your cat or dog - as many of you here expressed most ppl are prejudiced against rodents.

All I've ever had were fish. We travelled a lot when I was a kid and were gone most weekends, so it would have been hard to have a pet. Plus, my Dad was allergic to cats and dogs for the longest time and even now his allergies will sometimes act up.
