Movie Blurb by Shale
December 25, 2010
Just got back from the very crowded Cineplex on Lincoln Road, Miami Beach. Guess it's one of the only places open because it is always full of people on Xmas day.
OK, this thread was started on Dec 7th by another forum member from Miami Beach who saw an advance screening. His rundown was so concise and to the point I'd rather quote it than rewrite it more verbosely.
"This is easily the best film I have seen so far this year and it's based on a true story that's so out there that it has to be seen to be believed.
Jim Carey plays Steven Russel, a conman who quits his job at the police force after a life changing event and outs himself as a homosexual. He moves to Miami and gets involved in fraud and ends up in prison where he meets the love of his life, Phillip Morris (Ewan McGregor).
This film has a lot to say and is so full of twists and turns that it takes your emotions everywhere. Jim Carey has never nailed a role like this and I fully expect him to get some serious award recognition for his work as Steven Russel. I was honestly, whole heartedly moved by this picture so I do hope that it gets the attention it deserves."
What more can I say. Well, I should say that it is R-rated, probably for some of the simulated sex scenes. Wouldn't want the kids to see Carrey's character making love to his wife while stopping to discuss the days events. Could send the wrong message about married life.
Interestingly, on the aggregate reviews at Rottentomatoes, 73% of critics liked this movie and only 56% of audiences did. Hmmm, someone can do a study to see how many movie critics are gay.
All I can add is the personal impact this flick had on me - maybe not the best film for me because it had some disturbing, tense moments. Guess I have a thing about prison brutality and con artists that is a turn off.
Would I Lie to You?
But if you get into the absurdity of this con man and how he actually got over on the rubes so many times, you see the humor in it. Ultimately tho, this true story involves a guy who was a genius but compulsive con man who did keep getting caught.
Busted Again
But the story for me was the love portrayed between Russell and Morris - Perhaps originally a love of convenience but one that grew and engulfed both of them.
Prison "Cellmates"
And gotta say, even tho Carey was a bit too kinetic and conniving as Russell to sympathize with, McGregor portrayed Morris as the sweetest, most gullible guy looking for a strong, protective lover that I just wanted to whisk him away and hold him in my arms. But there were tender moments shown at times and both actors made the relationship look real.
Convincing Couple
Overall I enjoyed this movie. I can relate to an all encompassing love affair that bonds two people, even if one of them is a bit over the top and thrives on risk.
