Post by Supernova Thu Jan 27, 2011 7:44 pm

Sorry, I couldn't think of a better way to ask the question.

How many movies do you go to see in the theater these days? What kinds? What reasons?

I have not gone to a movie since Despicable Me came out last July, and going by the ads on TV, there's nothing coming out lately that's going to tempt me to go again anytime soon. Which really sucks because a few years ago I went to several movies a year at the theater, our town got its new theater in 2006 and since it opened I've been there over the years to see Garfield 2, Cars, Meet the Robinsons, Mad Money, The Bucket List, TMNT, The Blind Side, Madea Goes to Jail, Rush Hour 3, Unaccompanied Minors, Night at the Museum, Night at the Museum 2: Battle of the Smithsonian, Up!, Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium, The Golden Compass, some of them I went to twice, but this last year, going to 1 movie for the entire year, and the way things are going now, that's probably as good as it's going to be this year as well.

There's just NOTHING coming out that looks good to me. I very rarely see a movie ad on TV and think 'oh this will be great', I think more in terms of 'well, it might not be a TOTAL waste of time and my money', nothing that anybody puts out appeals to me. Now, in older movies, older ranging from 90s to the silent era, there's no shortage of what interests me, what I like.

Of course one big factor in this is I have TCM and I have the library which not only has a good variety of movies itself, it can get in movies on loan from other libraries, so to look into movies from these sources is not going to cost me $10 a pop, but even without considering the money, there just is NOTHING coming out these days to the theater that I get the feeling 'oh I should look into that, it could be fun'. Is anybody else like this or (as usual) is it just me?

I don't know about everyone else, but I really have no interest in seeing:

    live/computer action remakes of cartoons/comics

Movie remakes of TV shows from the 70s/80s/whatever

family/kids movies that pick the 'follow your heart'/'we'll always be a family' Vomit moment for one of their BEST scenes in the TV ads

The new Transformers or anything relating to them

Superhero movies that try to be 'modern' and 'realistic'

ANY new horror movies, they all suck and a lot of them for some reason rely on puke scenes to add to the 'disturbing scenes'

Any movie where the whole plot is a damn love story, again Vomit

Any movie about gangstas or whatever the hell they're called with the full body tattoos and racing cars and guns and half naked women and 'oh we so badass'

Take those away and you basically clear out the entire playing list at our theater. How about everyone else?

There are some movies I like but I usually wait for the DVD. I have seen 1 movie in the theaters in the past 2 years. And that was the only one we paid admission for out of our own pockets for a good 3 years before that. (We got free tickets or a gift card a few times before and therefore we saw a few scattered things here and there.)

Here's a list of the number of films I've seen in theaters, since 2005. This does not include those films I've seen two and three times (usually the top 10 films each year). It also does not include any film I've seen for the first time on a DVD, Pay-per-View or Cable:

    2005--107
    2006--121
    2007---91
    2008---89
    2009---86
2010--85 (about 15 others to see)

    Total 6 years---579 Movies

Obviously, it's too long to list each one, but I'll list the few I thought were exceptional:

    The King Speech
    The Kids Are All Right
    The Hurt Locker
    White Ribbon
    A Serious Man
    Milk
I Served the King of England
    No Country for Old Men
    Away From Her
    Once
Pan Labyrinth (best imo last 10 years)
    The Lives of Others
    Letters From Iwo Jima
    Brokeback Mountain
    Good Night, Good Luck
    Million Dollar Baby
    A Very Long Engagement
    Vera Drake
    Mystic River
    21 Grams

Number 4 does look like it has potential but I don't think it would be worth $8 to see, which is probably what the theater's charging by now, not having been there since July and it cost $10 for a 3D movie when the last one I saw before that was only $7, I don't know how much they charge now, but I do know their ticket prices only go up, never down. That's the big problem, nobody I know can afford to go to movies regularly, and what my brother's been saying for years is starting to make sense, it makes more sense to only pay $4 to get it rented from the video store when it comes out. But come to think of it, we hadn't done that either since whenever Up! came out on DVD.

Wow it costs $12.50 to see a movie here and $16.00 when its in 3D. Add $25.00 for 2 medium popcorn and small drinks and its a small fortune. It would be sad to see the downfall of the movie theater because I like seeing movies on a big screen. Your right though, people can't afford to go to the movies, especially a family and it would be well worth just waiting for it to come on DVD and watch it on your big screen TV at home.

I know, it's always a VERY different experience getting to see it on the big screen. But it's very odd, because if I go to a new movie at the movie theater and it costs almost $10, I never get my money's worth, the movie's not that great, maybe half of it is good, they have a few funny lines, and I get stuck sitting through 10 minutes of commercials and preview beforehand because when they announce the movie's time they don't bother telling you if that's when the movie starts or the previews start and you can never tell.

Now, in comparison, when the town's old opera house does its every-other-year silent film showing, that also costs $10 but I definitely get my money's worth there because they bring in a live orchestra to supply the music, and before the movie we get a 20 minute comedy short as well. I remember well last year they showed Buster Keaton's Our Hospitality with Charley Chase's short Dog Shy opening up for it, and I had the time of my life, I laughed myself sick at that, almost non-stop, that NEVER happens at the new movies playing.

Ugh lets not even mention the commercials, bad enough we have to put up with them on TV now we have to sit through them in the theater as well, I get quite annoyed having to sit through them. I have notice as of late a lot of the movies I have seen may keep you interested but then there is the ending that just does not make any sense or it leaves you hanging to come up with your own conclusion.

That sounds pretty cool what the old opera house does, I have never seen anything like that and I know that I would enjoy it as well, I like anything that is different and I could get into seeing old silent movies with an orchestra playing!

I KNOW! When they first started showing COMMERCIALS at the theater, I said 'isn't this what we come TO the theater to avoid having to see?

I know, the in thing with movies now seems to be an indecisive ending, like Swing Vote, we never find out who Kevin Costner makes the new president, or The Golden Compass, are they leaving us hanging because they plan to do a sequel, or what? I hate that.

Our movie shows commercials before the start time of the movie - then at that time they run thru the Trailers. I know they are commercials for upcoming movies but I enjoy the peek at what to expect and I consider it part of the movie going package. Also, if I'm running late I count on them keeping me from missing the opening of the movie.

What I hate are trailers on DVD's. I don't mind if I can hit "main menu" but some DVD's have that blocked, so I have to hit the "next scene" button for each trailer or put it on FF 32X and run thru them. Pissess me off no end. Wish there was a DVD consumer group to voice complaints - but alas, we know DVD's are another fading technology like the VHS tapes they replaced.

I so very rarely go to movies due to the cost. I really wanted to see The Social Network. It came out in Oct. and was already on DVD this month. It seems so silly to go to the theater when they are going to be out on DVD so fast.
