Even though the U.S. has prided itself on being a secular society, the show of religion has always been a strong one. Do you think society would be better or worse off if this weren't the case?

By default it would have to be better.
How many Atheists have burned ppl alive, filled mass graves with the "other" believers (Muslim, Jew, Christian, Hindu)?
In the US, Christians have used their religious beliefs as justification for killing homosexuals and abortion providers.

It'd be much worse. (*ducks the glass bottles) Just observe the decline over the years.
Of course, the only true "Godless" society is by definition, hell. God'll still be here regardless of whether a society wants to acknowledge him. The difference will be whether or not they pay attention or just live for themselves.
As for the "religious crimes" thing, that argument just doesn't hold up because many anti-God leaders caused massive deaths too.(The only reason it isn't more is because atheists haven't been the majority. Thinking that atheists in a majority would be somehow immune to the corruptions of such a position is pretty much willful blindness)
Atheists have shown themselves, over time, to be little different than any religious group. You got the tolerant ones who just wanna be left alone, and then you got the radicals who want anybody different from them to be snuffed out. The very premise of a "Godless" society by default suggests that it's these atheists running the show. Hence, it'd be no different than radical religious oppression. Life would be very difficult for all involved. Because it isn't religions that kill, it's people. People make choices for selfish reasons and religion is just an excuse. So this "Godless society" would not be one I'd ever want to live in because I know it wouldn't have any merit to it at all.

We seem to be a pretty Godless society today and I haven't seen any proof it's any better.

We aren't Godless. We're God-rejecting and God-rebelling. There's a big difference.

A secular society would be much better. Nothing is stopping people from having God in their lives. It's the fact they don't want the boundary to stop there. They want it put into the law & enforced on everyone else. They can pray, tithe, go to church & do all the things their bible tells them within their own personal space without infringing on the rights of other people.

Worse off. Some of the biggest charities and shelters around here are run by Christian organizations. without them, there would be a lot more pressure on the social services system and there would be a lot fewer people reaching out and helping those in need. There are three in particular that are really big where I live. Remove God from society and the hundreds of people who are served through these organizations throughout the year would be left on their own.

Despite how generally nonreligious I am, I think a society devoid of peoples faith in God or a semblance of Christianity would be much colder.

I don't think a God less society would be in society's best interest. Despite how overbearing and chaffing religion can be, it does have it's societal benefits. If no one believed in God, people would have less inspiration to be courteous to their fellow man. Religion should definitely stay, it just needs it to completely exiled from the world of politics.

That is the fallacy of not being able to think outside the traditional mindset. Religion does not inspire ppl to be courteous.Rainmaker wrote:I don't think a God less society would be in society's best interest. ... Most of the Cosa Nostra and Mafia members are devout Catholics, (as were many Nazi's). The KKK are devout Protestants, either Methodist or Baptist - and they pray as a group before putting on their robes.
As a social species, I think we can rationalize as Humanists and Atheists that it is for the common good to be courteous to our fellow man, not to steal or murder, without the "fear of god" forcing us to be good (which the above examples prove does not always work).
I have actually been discriminated against for that very reason. I was prevented from becoming a New Orleans cop in 1968 because the Major Terrebone at the Police Academy couldn't see how a person could have morality without the fear of god. That was before civil rights were firmly established by the EEOC.

Religion = social control for the masses. But in this day and age, it's just obsolete.
We don't need Jesus Christ or Moses. We have Google and Facebook, remember?

We live in a God-less society right now.
The further away we get from God the worse it gets and will get.

An unpopular opinion and one open to much scrutiny and ridicule but one that I agree with.
