I think morality stems from God. The Bible isn't necessarily tied directly to it.

Morality is rooted in whatever ethical standpoint a certain person follows. It only relates back to the Bible or a presence of God if that's what they person believes.

You mean like when Samson, a chosen of God, murdered a bunch of guys and stole their clothes to pay off a gambling debt? Yeah, Right!Chris wrote:Do you believe that morality stems from biblical teaching and a strong religious commitment?

Not necessarily. Though this does remind me of something I brought up once. Some people say that man invented the Bible, they made up God, etc., etc., okay, but WHY would anybody do that? MAN is not known for giving any kind of credit to someone else, by nature they want it for themselves, so WHY would they create a whole system of rules and not put themselves up on the pedastal as the one who created them? WHY would man, who by nature is selfish, lazy, hateful, spiteful, etc., make up rules of love thy neighbor, love thy enemies, do not steal, do not covet things, do not covet thy neighbor's wife, why would man do that? What would they be getting out of it? Because for one thing, they'd be expected to do all this work as well, and second, they'd never get any credit for making other people do it.

Religion is just another form of government. By creating an all powerful Big Brother in the sky you gain control of other ppl. THE CHURCH reaps the benefits for God Almighty.Supernova wrote:Not necessarily. ... Some people say that man invented the Bible, they made up God, etc., etc., okay, but WHY would anybody do that? ...
And for many centuries if you questioned that, you could be barbecued for the local entertainment. IDK where the exemption clause is for Thou Shalt Not Kill - except heretics and others that God Almighty could't off himself if they were a problem but THE CHURCH had that authority. So, pay no attention to the man behind the curtain - and continue with your duty to God Almighty.

I think modern morality is rooted in religion, but it's not like people didn't have a sense of right and wrong before organized religion started to take form.

No. I know many people like to think it is but it is but it isn't.

Not always, no. Biblical teaching and a strong religious commitment can set up a strong moral character for someone, but that's not the only way one can have a moral character. Values can be taught through many, many other ways, like family.
On the other side of the coin, there are plenty of Bible-thumpers who are assholes and who are basically ignorant to those who don't believe what they believe, but they believe they themselves are "good" because they follow the Bible (like the parts where sexually active unmarried women are stoned.)

No, I think a person can be living 100% with the belief that there is no God, but still run their life with morality because it is the right thing to do and their respect for mankind motivates them.
