Do you believe that morality is universal, and can it exist in a society without the appendage of religion?

I don't see morality surviving long without religion. However I do believe it universal in one sense. But I might get jumped on if I go into it. Razz

Morality to me is about honesty and treating others with decency and respect. Don't need religion to guide me on that.

    Yes and yes.

There is empirical support for the idea that, like other psychological faculties of the mind, including language and mathematics, we are endowed with a moral faculty that guides our intuitive judgments of right and wrong, interacting in interesting ways with the local culture. These intuitions reflect the outcome of millions of years in which our ancestors have lived as social mammals and are part of our common inheritance, as much as our opposable thumbs are.

I absolutely agree. I believe most of us, barring any form of mental illness are born with a sense of right & wrong. We can choose to go with that or against it. Don't see religion being necessary for it at all.

Morality is written on everyone's hearts; we all got senses of right and wrong. But those senses are the result of our creation and thus they are still intertwined in religion. IMO, you will smother morality by trying to isolate it from religion. That doesn't ensure morality just cause you got religion. But I think that, while we all have a sense of morality in us, trying to take it away from religion is the surest way to kill it. Some traces may still remain but I think ultimately that morality dies when it's taken from religion.

Not universal, it's personal. Morality is subjective - i.e. it describes a person's response to events rather than any objective property of the events.
