Scarface (1932) vs (1983) Empty
PostSubject: Scarface (1932) vs (1983)   Scarface (1932) vs (1983) EmptyWed Feb 16, 2011 11:39 am

Has anybody seen both of these movies? I swear, whoever says the Al Pacino one is NOT a remake, and apparently there HAVE been people who believe this, is an idiot, the whole thing reeks of remake.

Now, I'm usually particular to older movies, however, while I thoroughly enjoyed the original with bootlegging Tony Camonte, I prefer the remake with Tony Montana and his supply of 'yeyo'.

One thing people say about the original though, some people believe that Tony and his sister Cesca's relationship is incestual, or close to it, that Tony looks as his sister as he does any other woman, I don't believe this, you watch the movie, he carries it way too far with her when he finds out she's dating, just like Tony does with Gina in the remake, because he's concerned about her, because he cares about his sister, he doesn't want her getting mixed up with the scum like him, he won't admit it but he knows it. Now I don't recall if it was explicitly said in the '83 movie or if I'm thinking of the novelization of it, but I remember Tony said he wanted Gina to find a nice guy to be with, laywer, doctor, something; and I think that's what the original Tony had in mind as well.

One thing I prefer about the original, the camaraderie between Tony and Cesca in the original showdown with the cops, yeah, he killed her husband just like Tony killed Manny in the remake, but she is going to go down fighting with him, she's not trying to kill him like Gina was. Of course another difference in the original they were fighting cops, in the remake it's the other drug dealers and assassins, quite a bit of difference.

Overall, I found both movies to be very satisfying.

I never seen the original, but like alot of people love the al pacino version, but hhhmmm, 1932? that might be a lil too old for me to sit an watch.

as far the incest part, well throughout movie , i thought he was just being overprotective too, but at the end when she goes into his office, almost naked, when she starts shooting at him, an was like "im all yours, fuck me tony, fuck me" i thought that was kinda weird.

Quote :
Screenwriter Ben Hecht was a former Chicago journalist familiar with the city's Prohibition-era gangsters, including Al Capone. During the filming Hecht returned to his Los Angeles hotel room one night to find two Capone torpedoes waiting for him. The gangsters demanded to know if the movie was about Capone. Hecht assured them it wasn't, saying that the character Tony Camonte was based on gangsters like "Big" Jim Colosimo and Charles Dion O'Bannion. "Then why is the movie called Scarface?" one of the hoods demanded. "Everyone will think it's about Capone!" "That's the reason," said Hecht. "If you call the movie Scarface (1932), people will think it's about Capone and come to see it. It's part of the racket we call show business." The Capone hoods, who appreciated the value of a scam, left the hotel placated.

I thought the "shower scene" in the remake was a lot more disturbing than the one in Psycho.

That's the funny part, you look at that in the remake and people might think that, but people say if either one has incestuous overtones in it, it's the original, not the remake, but I never got that.

bump

I didn't know the 1983 film was a remake. Very good movie, though. One of the best of all times, in my opinion. I always preferred Deniro to Pacino, but I don't think the former has ever given a performance as good as this.

And funny too, like when he takes Elvira to buy a new car and is going on about all the added features to it and she says 'don't forget the fog lights' and he goes 'Oh! Incase I get lost in a swamp, that's a good idea! *honk honk* Get out of the way, lady, I'm driving here!'
