Do you feel colleges should be granting scholarships to, and/or making provisions for, kids who have a lackluster GPA, but are exceptional with a ball?

IDK why they should in all honesty. I kind of don't see the overall need.

Too often it's a corrupt system but because of the revenue it does generate for large colleges it probably won't change.

Theoretically, they shouldn't.....but they make the schools money, so financially....it's genius. You can only hope the players would be *smart* enough to take advantage of it.

No, I don't get the correlation between athletics and higher education. Scholarships should be based on ones academic potential - giving a chance to those smart poor kids who would miss out otherwise.
Of course as pointed out it is just an excuse to get some large bruiser on a football field to make a winning team for the school's image amongst contributors. A shallow sellout.

Athletic Scholarships? No. Free money should be given to kids who actually apply themselves in the classroom, not for some dumb jock who can't find Montana on a map.

I'm fine with athletic scholarships IF the kids have decent grades throughout the length of their scholarship.

I don't know what the rules are for these things, but in general I think every student there on an athletic scholarship should have at least a 2.5 GPA. Fuck a superior wide receiver....who off the field is a borderline D-student. Let him find another way to be scouted.

As somebody else said, the money they bring in is the issue and it is what it is. I do think they should have to maintain a certain GPA, less any "favors" from professors.

Big business for colleges and they don't bother me that much. Not everyone is excessively book smart, and if being able to run with a ball is the talent of some big oaf who otherwise would be limited to a minimum wage sweeping job, then so be it.

The problem is too many of those big oafs are going to wind up in minimum wage jobs anyway because the chance of making it as a pro athlete are remote. They're just being used and discarded. The problem doesn’t start in college. Star H.S. athletes who read at a fifth grade level are routinely passed.
