Homosexuality: nature's population control? Empty Homosexuality: nature's population control?

Post by Chris Fri Mar 18, 2011 7:13 am

It's been said that one of the reasons homosexuality is natural is because it's found in nature. Furthermore, some argue that it's natures attempt to prevent overpopulation. Do you agree?

IDK. It sounds like so much conjecture. And as usual, factor in us bisexuals and it skewers the studies. What are we here for? Perhaps there is no 'reason' for homosexuality except that some ppl are wired that way.

Besides, ppl who strongly idententify as homosexual, are grossed out by having sex with the opposite gender have nonetheless had children. My partner Jim had a daughter with his first marriage. I know several gay men of my generation who fathered children. So the population thing gets skewered there too. Lesbians are notorious for getting impregnated, either with a cock or a turkey baster.

I think that only works if they're sterile too.

I don't care what someone's sexual orientation is, but on a practical level I don't think that the relatively small numbers of homosexuals worldwide is contributing to population control.

No. I think homosexuality has been part of the human race's genetic makeup since the beginning. Back when there was no need for population control. In fact, the opposite was true and it was to our species' advantage that we reproduce as much as possible. Over population didn't become a problem until very recently, comparatively speaking.

But here's a question. Pubic hair: nature's dental floss?

I think people are nature's population control. It's why I'll never buy overpopulation. People just are too good at taking themselves out of the equation.

To a small extent homosexuality do sort of aid in population control today. Some gay couples simply chose not to be parents. When it comes to the gay couples who want to be parents there is always debate over insemination, surrogates, or adoption. My former boss and his partner debated over those issues for several years before deciding on adoption. At one point they thought about having a surrogate and each fathering a child a few years apart. But they came to a point, that when they thought deeply about the world and a lot of society issues, they decided to adopt a special needs child. Two years ago they adopted a four-year old boy with cerebral palsy.

They had a big adoption celebration party which I attended and there were other gay couples with kids there. There was a lesbian couple there, who had a baby through artificial insemination and they said that they really respected my boss and his partner's choice to adopt, but they wanted an experience to raise a child from infancy.
