What do you think of same sex kissing on network television? The reason why I ask is because apparently in Britain, they are cracking down on it.

The British Prime Minister Wants to Ban Gay Kisses on TV

Brian Moylan — The British Prime Minister Wants to Ban Gay Kisses on TVA new study commissioned by British Prime Minister David Cameron to protect children from seeing inappropriate images on television will suggest that no gay kisses be shown on television before the 9pm "watershed." But where will our young ones get their same-sex snogging?

Naturally many people, including a soap opera actress who plays a teenage lesbian, are furious about this. With good reason. If the suggestions from the study are enacted, straight people would still be able to kiss, fondle, and rut to their hearts content at any time of the day, but gay people have to wait until the end of the night. We're not suggesting you show kids pornography, but if they have to watch something as nasty as a man suck face with a woman, then they're certainly ready for a little bit of girl-on-girl action to distract them from their homework. Fair is fair!

I have to say I'm surprised that this is coming from England where I thought they were more liberal than us. Perhaps I was mistaken. As far as shows in the U.S., if you don't like the show's content - change the channel. You probably don't even have to get off your ass. I say this as a middle age heterosexual man who is not comfortable watching two men French kiss. Just because I have "liberal" views on gay marriage, etc. doesn't mean I like to watch. But because of those views, I'm not going to object when that segment of our society gets their due.

What bothers me is the argument that any sort of gay affection on television is too much and is "being shoved down America's throat." Because I think hetereosexuality is EVERYWHERE.

Boring and often comes across as stunty. I roll my eyes with heterosexual couples always kissing and when they seem to go out of their way to show their homosexual couple in a kiss, it makes me roll them more. I'm frankly bored with kissing on TV. I could take more shows where people find other things to do with their time.

It IS reality & people need to start accepting that. This is why I keep saying exposure is so important. Nothing can be understood without exposure to it. Remember the anti-gay everything guy who now supports gay marriage? It was his encounter with a gay man who helped him to understand. It's obscene that people believe gay couples should "keep that stuff to themselves" when they certainly don't feel that way about straight couples. Exposure helps people who don't get it that gay couples are no different, it is not evil or an "abomination". What's an abomination is forcing people to hide as if they're doing something wrong & denying them the same simple liberties as everyone else. Having gay couples on tv is long overdue & will hopefully help some see this is very normal & maybe even wonder what the big deal was all along. I'm glad to see it & know it has to be encouraging especially to those who are struggling.

Cause it tends to come off as "we can't actually write a good story so we're just going to show people kissing and pass it off as good television." Lazy writing to me, IMO. Especially cause the stories surrounding it are often contrived or boring. So yeah, I roll my eyes. Kissing on television is just so overused that it's totally meaningless anymore. It's kinda like: "Oh? They're kissing? Psh, who cares. Everyone does that."

That wasn't really my question, so let me rephrase: Let's assume for a moment that the issue is not "lazy writing" and that we are talking about a well written story with good content and good actors. Let's also assume that we are discussing a film where the couple expressing physical affection towards each other is natural, apporpriate and essential to the storyline at that moment in time. Why would you roll your eyes MORE if a homosexual couple is depicted as kissing rather than a heterosexual couple?

Prolly not if all your assumptions are true, which I've rarely found to be the case. Most often, they tend to forsake the story for the "look at us! We got two chicks kissing! Screw everything else." FORGIVENESS MAN (Or we have one of those overnight homosexuals who can go from straight to gay in one episode. FORGIVENESS MAN) Shows tend to slack on kissing and rely on kissing to take over plot. So I say, screw the kissing. Ain't nothing impressing about two people kissing. Especially considering it's overuse. Give me more drama, less smooching! big grin

Well, frankly I doubt that you would have chosen to watch such material to begin with, let alone noticed that it was beying portrayed appropriately. Anyway, the only reason I felt it necessary to narrow the parameters of the question for you is because of how you initially came off in your first response (which was rather homophobic though I doubt you could even see it). Its just another exmaple overall of how you swear you are not homophobic but how your own responses very often paint you as such. In the interest of "clarity", I thought it was important for me to get you to clarify what you meant by your response. Because, we wouldn't want you comming off as homophobic in anyway big grin

When you one day learn to admit when you are wrong instead of trying to always find a way to make yourself come off as "correct" regardless of what you actually say, then you wont have to worry about being called out (by me) anymore. Until then, only time will tell when you actually reach that level. Sometimes its important for me to embarrass people that have no reservations about offending others. Not because I like being mean, but because sometimes people need to be put in their place and made accountable for the things that they say. I know YOU don't really care about offending people, but as long as you have that attitude then nobody is really going to respect anything you have to say. If you want to be taken seriously and come off as someone who posts intellegent responses, you're going to have to think about what you actually write and how it will be perceived by the majority (especially in the digital era). I'm surprised Britain is like this! I always thought they were wayyyy ahead of us - but who isn't, right? Nevertheless, banning same-sex kissing on TV until a certain time is just going to add to the taboo and to the ignorance of it. And it's teaching kids that it's "dirty" and "forbidden". A homosexual kiss is the same thing as a heterosexual kiss, in my opinion - one's not dirtier than the other.

It is disgusting to me. That does not mean I believe it should be banned any more or less than straight couples doing the same thing on TV and the movies.

If it is disgusting enough I simply may not go to see a movie that has those scenes. Now, that I think about it I remember the scene on the movie "Runaway Bride" when one of the actors kissed another guy. I actually laughed. Maybe little by little I getting over the disgust I feel. I suppose it depends how blunt is the scene between two men. I also feel the same way if I see two women but I admit not as much.

    You have a great day.

    @Bryce:

If somebody is close-minded enough to believe me a bigot because somebody called me a homophobe for whatever the latest reason they've contrived is(and that's all you do is contrive excuses to call me it), then they likely ain't worth my time.

That wasn't even related to my last part you quoted. Razz The thing is Bryce, the majority of people I encounter do respect me and do care about what I have to say. I have no problem admitting that I am wrong but the problem is that I don't admit I am wrong because somebody tells me that I am. (And I most certainly don't do it because somebody doesn't like my opinion.) So I can admit when I am wrong just fine. I've gladly admitted to people who've actually taken time to prove it rather than just call me names and try to snobbishly "educate" me.

Well if you think you're embarrassing me or putting me in my place, you're worse off than I thought. All you're doing is repeating the same insult over and over again like a playground bully and then laying the blame on me. So yeah, I know I am taken seriously by SERIOUS people. Non-serious people? Well, they just call me a name. I've long since stopped being bothered by you and your "gotcha" trolling.

I notice yet again you don't even discuss the topic at hand. lol I'm going to start speculating if you keep it up. Razz
