Subject: What do you think of Britney Spears' "Circus"? Tue Aug 31, 2010 2:12 pm
Hi all,
I recently bought this at a yard sale for 50 cents. Half is good, half is bad - but the half that is bad ("Blur", "Mannequin", "My Baby", etc.) is really bad. I would recommend this album, only if it's advertised at an extremely cheap price. However, there are a few good tracks on it, too. Over the last several years Brit has turned more toward the hip & hop sound, which is total crap. She just follows what is popular, there's no originality in her music. All in all, don't pay $10-$15 for this crap! Thoughts? Opinions?

Based on the singles I heard from it, I wasn't impressed. I'm never impressed with her....I just don't "get" her appeal. She's an atrocious singer, her music is corny, and she has no "personality." I see her as a modern day/faux Barberella....or a retread of Baywatch-era Pam Anderson from 15 years ago. I despise Christina Aguilera too, but even though she's a phony who believes her own wannabe-hype, and her music is equally as corny....at the end of the day, at least she has a voice to justify her place, if nothing else.
Britney is just....why?
Seriously, I don't get it.

Here is Britney's full song "Hold It Against Me". I think it's generic but somebody else must like it because its #1 on iTunes after only a day after it was released!

I was waiting to hear from you, specifically.
I just don't get her appeal. She sort of made sense in 1999, when she was a teenager making teen pop that was the rage back then, but twelve years later, she's still in the same place. She hasn't evolved at all, IMO. I just don't get what folks see in her today.

With all her bad publicity and the fact that she is stuck in the 90's leaves a bad taste for me. She should just retire and take care of her kids or go hang with her pals Lindsay and Paris two other has beens.

She can't sing. I mean SERIOUSLY, she CAN'T sing. Her voice is "ugly". I remember seeing her perform on the AMA's one year. She was doing that "I'm Not A Girl/Not Yet A Woman" song and my moms walks in and asked who that was on the TV. When I said who it was, she was like "what's wrong with her? She really sound like that?" As for the song, just more of the same too fast electro techno dance tripe we been getting from every other female singer over the last year. It's a loud generic obnoxious sound that for some reason is popular with the iTunes kiddies.

I don't like it. I used to think she had talent. But after she started to broadcast her crazy, I was over it.

I haven't ever liked her...But I've seen candid photos of her and man, I wish I had someone who could make me look that good with their magic makeup and everything because she looks WAY better there.

The song is cow-pie, but that's to be expected and is really beyond the point.
Britney Spears is truly a pop phenomenon. It really takes a genius to sell music with literally no singing voice, which is exactly what she does. At this point, nobody cares about the song, they care about the fact that it's a "Britney Spears song". This is what will push almost all her releases to #1.
Gotta hand it to Britney, she's been in the industry for over 10 years but still manages to draw so much attention. In 2006/2007, when her singles weren't charting and she was being snubbed at radio, few would've thought her career would ever be saved from this
All it took was for her to get skinny, regrow her hair, and to pretend that the Zoloft was working, and like that she's back at the top with more green fly attractors.

This is a stupid song! And this is a single? Britney's been around 12 years or so and there's been absolutely no evolution to her "artistry". She's still singing about the same crap when she first came on the scene. Not to mention her voice is lousy. She basically sings about the same thing over and over. She may be a singer, because she sings, but she's no artist.

Britney Spears' 'Hold It Against Me' Debuts Atop Hot 100
Britney Spears becomes just the second artist in the Billboard Hot 100's 52-year history to debut multiple songs at No. 1, as "Hold It Against Me" blasts in at the summit.
Spears previously launched at the apex with "3" the week of Oct. 24, 2009. She joins Mariah Carey as the only acts to arrive at No. 1 more than once. Carey made such grand entrances with "Fantasy" and "One Sweet Day" in 1995 and "Honey" in 1997. (All charts will be refreshed tomorrow (Jan. 20) on Billboard.com).
Hold It Against Me" is the 18th song to debut at No. 1 and the first since Ke$ha's "We R Who We R" the week of Nov. 13, 2010.
The track is Spears' fourth No. 1 on the Hot 100. Prior to "3," she reigned with her debut single "...Baby One More Time" (two weeks, 1999) and "Womanizer" (one week, 2008).
"Hold It Against Me" starts atop Digital Songs with 411,000 downloads sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan. As previously reported, the sum marks the highest debut frame by a lead female artist, besting the 325,000 shifted by Taylor Swift's "Today Was a Fairytale" the week of Feb. 6, 2010.
On Radio Songs, "Hold It Against Me" begins at No. 23 with 45 million first-week audience impressions, according to Nielsen BDS, the highest audience sum for a debuting title in the chart's history. The song's No. 23 entrance is the chart's best since Mariah Carey's "Touch My Body" began at the same rank the week of March 1, 2008.
Two other tracks storm the upper reaches of the Hot 100. "What the Hell," the first single from Avril Lavigne's fourth album, "Goodbye Lullaby," due March 8, opens at No. 13. The song starts at No. 6 on Digital Songs with sales of 163,000.
At No. 23 on the Hot 100, Kanye West and Jay-Z debut with "H*A*M." The first single from the superstar pair's upcoming collaborative album, "Watch the Throne," enters Digital Songs at No. 10 (125,000).
Directly below "Hold It Against Me" on the Hot 100, three titles dip one notch each: Bruno Mar's "Grenade" (1-2) Katy Perry's "Firework" (2-3) and Rihanna's "What's My Name?" featuring Drake (3-4).
Wiz Khalifa's "Black and Yellow" lifts 7-5, jumping Enrique Iglesias' "Tonight (I'm Lovin' You)," featuring Ludacris & DJ Frank E (6-6), while "We R Who We R" slides 4-7.
P!nk descends 5-8 with "Raise Your Glass" but claims dual Greatest Gainer/Digital and Airplay honors with "F**kin' Perfect" (57-30). The second new track from her "Greatest Hits... So Far!!!" retrospective bounds 66-25 on Digital Songs (70,000, up 95%) and 68-44 (27.5 million, up 54%) on Radio Songs.
The Black Eyed Peas "The Time (Dirty Bit)" and Mars' "Just the Way You Are" round out the Hot 100 top 10, each dropping a rung to Nos. 9 and 10, respectively.

That annoyingly rabid fanbase of hers, racing to iTunes in droves. Because Billboard puts more of an emphasis on sales than airplay these days, this completely forgettable song was able to zoom to the top.

This song makes me fear for her children. I mean, girl- you're a parent. Get it together. At least the song "3" was something I could empathize with!
