I hadn't thought much about this for several years, but as a kid, did you have magazines of your own to read?

I had Crayola magazine, and Sesame Street magazines, my mother got her own one of those, it was more of a parenting magazine that came with mine, she never read them but I did, and then several years after that my mother subscribed me to Highlights for Children, I preferred Crayola.

Oh, and we had Zoo Books, my brother had all of them, I had ONE issue about penguins because I loved the movie Scamper the Penguin, and I knew a lot about penguins at 7 years old, but I never read his. And I had an aunt who sent me Ranger Rick, but I didn't care much for them.

    How about everyone else?

i forgot MAD magazine! That was awesome Supernova, you would have loved it. They even had a MAD mag board game which was sort of like monopoly, but you had to act things out-- such as "pretend to be your favorite animal" or "cluck like a chicken". Had lots of family fun then!

I didn't as a kid. If I saw any, it was at school.

I currently get Ranger Rick and another animal magazine (can't recall the name) and I only get them because I do a little job for Quad Graphics, which I have to report received dates of all sorts of publications, mostly catalogues. But, the Ranger Rick and that other one, and basically full of pictures with very little content, so I don't know how a parent would justify the cost.

Probably as it being educational or something. A lot of those up close pictures of spiders and stuff just freaked me out. I remember then they had a comic story section, that was good, and one October issue showed how to make far out designs on pumpkins and carve them out, but otherwise I didn't get much use out of them, but I never told anyone because it meant so much to my aunt, that I kept them for several years after she died even though I didn't have any use for them.

They are educational, but they are so limited, and the Internet has just as much info. Before we had Internet in the home, I used the library for resources to teach my son about animals/insects. Now that we have Internet in the home, I use that a lot to cover things like that when we do things outside of his classwork.

Had the Weekly Readers in grade school; other than that I was a comic book junkie.

But I enjoyed reading through my mother's Photoplay, Modern Screen, Life and Look magazines. Occasionally she had a National Geographic and aside from the fascination with naked people I also tried to read about native tribes in other parts of the world.

I also liked to snoop in her Confidential magazines, which were scandal rags of the early-to-mid-60's. Didn't understand a lot of the articles but understood some. Still remember reading about the first known transsexual, Coccinelli. Mom would get furious when she caught me perusing those.
