I'm hoping somebody can clarify this for me. Last night we saw the new episode of SVU and a couple reported their car stolen with their baby on it, and the news report described it as a 1990 something or other, and my mother said 'what's wrong with that statement?'

We had been told some years back that older cars are not allowed in big cities, like nothing before a '95 model, why that is, we were never told, but is that true that only cars from '95 and over are allowed in big cities?

Is Miami a big city? We have vintage cars all the time on the streets here. If a car is roadworthy it can go on the street whether new or old.

Portland is not that big of a city but, regardless of its own political quirks, this one about older cars. . . no.

It definitely sounds like something San Francisco may enforce but I've not heard of this at all.

Stupid idea since more people are trying to hold onto their cars longer.

See that's what I thought, but we were told that we couldn't take our car to a place like New York City because it's too old. It's a 90-something model, what year I couldn't say for certain though. The interior is not ship shape but it does what it's supposed to.

Hmmm. Boy, that would be interesting to find out. If it's true then my guess (and a GOOD guess, I'd say) is that the city slapped that ban as a way to cut the stampede of traffic.

I know there's at least one NYC poster on here. Hope they answer this one.

Supernova, you need to start asking for documentation when someone tells you these things. What did you find when you searched the internet?

The only thing I found was that some cities in France plan to ban old cars, and motorbikes, and other vehicles, due to the pollution. Though I'll admit, I myself didn't hear this statement because I was a kid at the time and not present when my parents were told it.

I mean really. I can't even fathom some of the things she comes up with. ANY car, regardless of make, year or model, is allowed in every city if its properly registered and has insurance. I've seen cars from the 40's on the roads here as recently as 2 weeks ago. Seeing someone drive a car from the 70's and 80's is not uncommon at all.

Yeah, but didn't your parents also tell you locks weren't allowed on bedroom doors or something? Question authority.

Never heard this before. Plenty of vintage cars and clunkers here in NY.
