Would (or did) you insist on only 'wholesome' entertainment for your kids?

If you had a child who was under twelve or thirteen years old, would you (or did you, if you have kids) insist that they only be exposed to 'child-geared' or 'wholesome' entertainment? In other words, no top 40 radio, no TV-PG, no movies that aren't 'family' oriented, etc., etc.

When you were a kid, did your parents insist that you do the same?

My parents didn't insist on it, and I prob. won't either. I would just monitor the content. I wouldn't have any hard rules, but certain stuff they won't be able to watch....period.

For the most part we were only allowed to watch kids' kinds of TV and movies when we were little, but there were exceptions: Overboard, Batman, The Blob (1988), Coneheads, etc., and by the time we were 12, forget it, by that time we could pretty much see whatever the hell we wanted.

I never had restrictions as a kid but I would monitor what my nephews and nieces are watching.

As anal as I could be about some things, I wasn't with this. And, oddly enough, the only show I refused to allow my daughter to see for a few years was "Simpsons" because I didn't think the disrespectful, mouthy little shit characters was good for her to watch.

I didn't have any restrictions when I was a kid. There wasn't really anything that objectionable on the air. We just used our best judgment with our daughter with no problems.

Same here. I was pretty much allowed to watch anything that could get by censors on network tv. But like others have said, there wasn't as much cussing, nudity or violence on back in the 80s. As long as it isn't porn, or really graphic violence or anything, I don't see the harm.

My mother attempted to stop me from watching Married With Children and In Living Color, but that didn't last long. She wasn't thrilled about the Simpson's, but didn't bother saying no.

With my kids, I basically let them watch anything on network TV and basic cable. It's the pay cable channels that I use a little more discretion with.

I'd probably set a lot harder limits with my kids than I had. FORGIVENESS MAN Merely cause TV is so bad for them and I'd like them to be a little less addict then I am. Wink *evil laughs

Yeah, when I was a kid everything on air or in the movies was pretty much PG rated for adults and kids. TV standards were unbelievably strict - couldn't say the word virgin or pregnant, husbands and wives had twin beds or had one foot on the floor if in a double bed. d-oh!

I was of age before the entertainment industry in America bucked the standards censors.

I know in 1979 I had an 11-year-old kid living with me and I took him to movies he couldn't get into alone. They were graphically violent but "everybody was Kung Fu fighting" in those days and I didn't see them as particulary harmful. I had to sit with him thru some of the worst martial arts movies coming out of Hong Kong (dubbed in English).
