If you teach them how to lose, they will appreciate winning and understand the concept isn't winning or losing, but doing your best.

Does more good than harm. I wouldn't discourage it, but I would make sure he/she keeps a level head about it. The parents are often worse than the children and THAT puts competitive sports among kids in a bad light.

Good if they want to be there. Teaches commitment, team work and mental strategy.
