I've always loved both but was always biased towards the original, but then about 4 years ago I was driving home one night and Me'lisa's version came on the radio during the quiet storm segment and then it just hit me......I was feeling her version much, MUCH more. So I'ma go with Me'lisa for this one.

Chaka's is cool....but I'll definitely take the original. All that 'Chaka, Chaka, Chaka Kahn' ad-libbing at the beginning is annoying.

The original from the great Ann Peebles
or from one of my favorite films, The Commitments. I think this is Angeline Ball

Re: The 'Cover songs' thread
My verdict: Tie. I know I should probably favor the original, and dismiss INOJ's bass cover as flaky, but truth be told I like her version equally as much as I do RFTW's.

Harry Chapins is the best but Ugly Kid Joe did a respectable job with it.

My verdict: Deborah Cox did a decent job, but SOS Band totally owns this.

Aaliyah's remix version is SO much better. I like her album cover of the song as well, but the remix just pushed it over the top.

Surprisingly, Rihanna didn't botch it....annoying as her voice is. I don't hate it, but the original will ALWAYS reign supreme.

I feel slightly uncomfortable admitting it, but I like Kim Wilde's version better.

Re: The 'Cover songs' thread
Like Annie's light, airy spin on the song....but shit, you already know what I'm going to say. It's the classic epitome of a reggae song. And I'm a reggae girl.

Re: The 'Cover songs' thread
I actually like the instrumentation on Johnny's version a bit more, but Bob's voice is 10X better. Another classic tune. Everyone's skankin'. Bob and the Wailers win.

Re: The 'Cover songs' thread
The original is awesome, don't know why The Beatles even bothered, Jimi did okay, Tosh just killed it. Definitely re-did that song the best while incorporating reggae's bass and the guitar. Tosh gets the win.

I don't feel at all uncomfortable admitting that I think Wilde's version crushes the Supremes original.

Re: The 'Cover songs' thread
Both are trite as hell, but I'm siding with the original cheese rock ballad by Bad English. It has much more nostalgia about it. The Uncle Sam cover is completely unremarkable and disposable.
