Do you think that people should personally care for loved ones who're sick, elderly, etc., etc. -- against their doctors wishes? In other words, if a physician recommends that they should reside in a facility or a home, where the staff is trained to care for people with their special needs, would you consider it foolish for someone to decide to take on the burden themselves?

No. A lot of those special care facilities abuse their patients. If you're able, there is nothing wrong with taking care for your loved one yourself.

For the most part. If you're willing and able to give them the care they need without putting them at risk, go for it.

In our family, a 'home' is not just the last resort, it's downright despicable.

I suppose one would have to weigh the circumstances and pro's/con's. Since I'm not skilled in medical care, I wouldn't be quick to defy or disregard doctors recommendations when it comes to the care of a special needs loved one. But that's just me.
