I don't think we have any Italian ancestry in my family but I ALWAYS do that, and I didn't know that it was largely an Italian thing until I saw a later episode of Homicide and started looking up Italian hand gestures, that's when you find you they're responsible for most of the ones we use in our everyday life; cuckoo, asleep, 'psst, m'ere!' etc.
