Anybody got any clever ways to deal with prank phonecallers(or telemarketers, not like there is much difference anyway )?

I think caller id revolutionized impeding prankster calls. Now i just don't answer any # that is annon or sometimes any I don't know.

If I get a sales person, I tell them that we are literally packing at the moment as our house was foreclosed on. Telemarketing calls here have been fierce lately.

I know, tell me about it. I usually put the phone down to get the person they want and they get impatient waiting.

I just say that I am on the no call list, which I am and will be happy to report them. Then they can't apologize and hang up fast enough.

I, too, am on the list, and have noticed that it does not always work when I tell them I am on the list and to stop calling.
There is one group out there that has something to do with vehicle warranties that are so persistent in their marketing calls. I don't think anyone will deter them.

The state I live in have their own law about such calls, and they are tough on violations. I think in the last 5 years I have received three marketing calls, and they apologized and pleaded not to be turned in.

Caller ID does help a lot. It actually shows up on our TV screen too so i don't have to get my butt out of my recliner. FM's tactic of answering and putting the phone down is fun too but what I'd really like to get is a recording of the message you get when you dial a disconnected number and play that. But there's also this...

Yeah just hang up on them in mid sentence, Im sure they feel the fool and will not call back. I am on a national registry list that blocks telemarketers from calling me but I do get one now and then and I just hang up on them. If anyone is interested i will try to find the website where you sign up for it.

I've never tried this, but I always wondered if turning the tables on them and talking their ear off (asking a bunch of questions at once, answering their questions with questions, or bringing up things totally unrelated) would scare them off.

My boss once got a telemarketer (for credit cards) on the phone and said, "Yeah, I just don't understand why my payments are so high. I mean, I do buy a LOT of porn. Hot, man-homosexual porn, can you help me with that?"

Someone called me yesterday and told me that I won a $100 Wal-Mart gift card. They somehow picked my name and number randomly from some contest I entered. I was like "word? Okay, that's cool". Then he said that I would have to pay $2.95 S/H for them to send me the card. Then he asked for my credit card/debit card number. I told him "hold on, let me go get it". Click.

I don't do anything clever, I just hang up on them. I rarely answer the phone anyway, I usually just sit there when it rings and see if someone will leave a message.

Yeah - Caller ID rally has made a difference. I don't bother with numbers I don't know or numbers that come up with a number as the name and I don't even bother with 1-800 numbers. I only pick up if I know the number or if a name comes up.
I LOVE that murder call clip. I've seen it before a bunch of times and it never fails to make me laugh.

I usually set the phone down on the table and walk away when a telemarketer calls, and let them talk to the air, and eventually they hang up. Sometimes I'll ask them to call back, and give them the number to New England Pest Control which I keep handy for such occasions, but I think I might try Alan's YouTube post, next time! LOL
