I buy them because they're more reliable than say the Powerball or something, more likely to win something...and I've managed to put away a little bit of money from the winnings, which in turn are used to buy more tickets so it doesn't have to come out of pockets, so I'd say it's a good deal if you know which ones to play.

Scratch-off lottery tickets
Who buys them? And who wins on them?

Re: Scratch-off lottery tickets
Don't buy them, and you're just throwing your money away when you do. Granted, the lottery gives you horrible odds to begin with......but you'd have a much better chance playing a Powerball or Mega Millions quick pick and getting lucky with that than you would on a scratch off. What's fucked up the most about it is that the lottery will STILL sell scratch off tickets of the games that the top prize has already been won on. And they won't tell you. Let's say they make a million scratch off cards of [insert whatever clever name game here] and the top prize is 100k. Only like 5 or 6 of those cards would be the 100k winner. 90% of the rest would be absolutely nothing and the other 10% would have winnings of some kind. It is a complete rip off. I'd have a better chance picking my bad luck.

Re: Scratch-off lottery tickets
Don't do the scratch offs. Powerball usually. But it's $3 here $12 there. Not a lot of luck.

Re: Scratch-off lottery tickets
I think some of those scratch offs are real rip offs, like 3 of the same dollar amounts in a row, who wins those? But one where you match your numbers against the winning ones, or a card game where your hand has to beat the dealer's, those are more likely to win something on.

Re: Scratch-off lottery tickets
I've bought them to give as gifts and have gotten a few in return but I don't buy them regularly. I am aquianted with two people who won $10,000. Most I ever won was a couple of dollars. I don't know about your particular state but on the NJ web site there is a loterry section where you can find out what prizes are still available on all of the games. That way you can avoid buying one that doesn't have at least the potential for a big payoff.

Re: Scratch-off lottery tickets
I don't think we have that option but I don't know. For the most part we just win free tickets (which if you play your cards right can work out because we wind up buying one ticket, win a free one on it, take it back, win a free one on that too, etc), or $1 or $2, maybe $4, but a while back I bought a $1 ticket and one $40 on it. Now that's a good gamble in my opinion.

Re: Scratch-off lottery tickets
I'm gonna buy one one of these days. Maybe I'll have beginners luck. On the same day I'll buy a lotto ticket too. Maybe I'll be able to not ever have to work again!

I haven't in years. I keep meaning to buy another, but I never think about it when I'm at the store. Probably for the best, I never win.

Tell me about it, we used to get $1 or $4 on the Powerball, not anymore, and lately we've been winning free tickets on the ones we get so we don't have to pay for the next ones, scratch them off, win more free tickets, take them back, win $5, etc.

And you'll lose your money 99% of the time. You'd have a much better of winning something on Powerball than you would on a scratch-off. I keep telling people, you are throwing your money away buying those shits. Li.ter.al.ly.

wit me, ive come out pretty even, i havent done the actual math, but i win some, lose some.. and i dony buy them often enought to where ive a lost a good amount of money.
(besides playin crosswords or bingo is a bit more fun than pickin random numbers, or lettin the machin pick them for you)

And also, if you know the right tickets to play, it can make some extra money, last year I got $110 to spend that was won back from scratch offs, NEVER had that kind of luck with Powerballs, a dollar here, two dollars there, but you have to spend 2 dollars to get the Power play so you don't win anything back off of them...I've had a few $1 and $2 tickets that won $10, $25 and even $40.

Re: Scratch-off lottery tickets
I like the $1 ones that are like blackjack, or tic-tac-toe, those I seem to have some of the best luck on. And also whenever they get out the ones that support the Veterans, I play those too and sometimes I win, two years ago on my birthday I won $25 on a Betty Boop ticket. And then I like the ones that have second chance prizes on them, haven't won any yet but that's not saying I won't, and there's one coming up where the second chance cash prize is worth more than the original jackpot.

Re: Scratch-off lottery tickets
I thought I'd share this story with everyone. There is a $1 Mother's Day ticket out which is match the symbol, win the dollar amount beneath it, win up to $4,000, of course nobody has yet, but yesterday I went out and got my mother 10 of the tickets to scratch off, and she won $12 on them...so I took the tickets back today, got 12 more tickets, and she won $8 on them, so I'm going to take them back again later, put $2 with it, get 10 more and see what we can win this time. I figure at this rate sooner or later we've gotta stumble onto a bigger prize if there are any on the roll.

Re: Scratch-off lottery tickets
I like scratch-off tickets pretty well. I get one or two every once in a while when I go to a gas station. I usually don't win big amounts (I think $25 was my highest), but it's fun, and if you a lose a little money while having fun, why not?
