"Don't Hit Women"

Do you agree with the "you shouldn't hit a woman if you're a man" mantra?

Why or why not?

I fondly remember being in the 9th grade and getting into a harsh verbal exchange with a female classmate. While I didn't strike her, we said some very ugly things to each other. I gave as good as I got verbally and SHE slapped me, and I almost lost it on her. IF there hadn't been people there to hold me back, I would have fucked her up. I was about a inch away from slamming her face off the marble floor. If it had been a boy, I'd have done it.

Basically I do. I guess it depends. If she's 5'2 100 lbs and slaps a guy that's 6' and 200 lbs., then hitting her back doesn't sound too fair, but if she's repeatedly punching and kicking him (being the "abuser") then I wouldn't feel too bad for her if he turned around popped her one back.

Of course, I also like Madea's approach to it, "You can't hit that woman! Let me get you some mace."

I would prefer not to hit a woman at all. Since I am more than likely stronger I would just subdue her until she calms down. However, I will not tolerate her hitting me either, once ok, twice, pushing it, third time, you best run, you can be sure my Italian temper is up by then.

Let me put it this way:
I'll never hit a woman first....but there's no way a woman's gonna bust me in my mouth and not get hers rocked. The way I see, don't lay a hand on someone in anger who you couldn't take being hit back by. That's just common sense that if someone is hit, they'll have a physical reaction.

I don't believe we should default with violence against either gender. I think the "don't hit a woman" line is a bit ridiculous. It shouldn't matter what gender the other person is. You shouldn't be unnecessarily violent with them but at the same time, you should take abuse from somebody just because they are female.

It really depends on the situation and who the woman is. Because she's a woman, if she's physically provoking me then I'll be gentleman enough to give her a 120 second head start to cease and desist. If she keeps on, then my back hand might start to itch.

Nine times out of ten, no. People should learn to keep their hands to themselves if they don't want to get hit back. Including women.

I don't believe anyone should hit anyone else regardless of sex and I think a "reaction" to violence should only be as harsh as the initial outburst of violence. In other words, proprtionality needs to be observed. Men are stronger than women, so a man hitting a woman is usually going to result in a higher degree of potential injury. This is probably the origin of this sexist tradition. In addition, young boys are usually more aggressive/violent than young girls and are probably unable to restrain their reactions or observe proprtionality without this notion of "not hitting girls" keeping them in check. So in a sense, the rule (though sexist) does serve a practical purpose. Slamming a girls head into the floor is probably not an appropriate response to simply being slapped.

Having said that, if a woman slaps a man in the face, she absolutely DESERVES to get slapped back and if a man does this in self defense I see absolutely nothing wrong with it. Some women need to be put in their place. Particularly the kind who think they are shielded by the sexist morals society places on us. A lot of women think that they are free to put their hands on a man because he won't hit her back. All of this "men should never hit women" nonsense is just an old fashioned relic meant to invoke unjustified chivilry in our society as the norm, regardless of the circumstances. It's silly, hypocritical, illogical and sexist. If a woman thinks that she has the right to hit a man, why is the reverse not true? It makes no sense. When a man is guilty of domestic violence, the results are often devistating to the woman. But women are guilty of domestic violence far more often than men are. Men don't report when their wives or girlfriends slap them for a plethora of reasons, so we typically don't consider "women" the physical aggressors in a relationship. But just because these incidents are not reported (or even discussed) doesn't mean they don't happen. If a man puts his hands on a woman for any reason it's called domestic violence. When a woman does the same thing, nobody gives a shit!

Logic indicates that you shouldn't pick a fight with someone who could drop you. In the meanwhile, the bigger person is supposed to be "the bigger person" and shrug off the abuse, feeling empowered by the knowledge that if they wanted, they could hurt the irrational wannabe scrapper who tried to pounce on them. It's all too much of a double standard/circular spin cycle for me. No one should be hitting anybody is the gist of it all. If a (weaker) woman hits a man, he should up the ante by pressing assault charges instead. Via criminal charges, make her wish that he HAD opted to hit her back instead.

I don't think ANYONE should be hit, regardless of their gender. It bothers me how it seems acceptable for a women to hit a man. I saw that the other day on OLTL - a women his a guy and it was fine. Had a guy hit a women, it would have been the end of the world and the guy would be bashed and trashed, but why is it okay for this woman to hit a man? We teach our kids it's not nice to hit so why should that change as you get older?

Double Standards. xD I say anybody who hits somebody else has no room to gripe if they are hit back.

I think a man should walk away. Of course a woman should not hit a man, but men, if you get tangled with a woman who thinks it is ok to hit you, walk away.

I agree with it in theory, and to a point. If a woman hit me once, I would probably try to resist any urge to hit her back. If she stood there pummeling me, or was insistent on continuing the fight, even after I tried to squash it, then don't look at me like I was no better than Ike Turner if I did turn around and slap her back.

I say it works both ways then. If it's okay for a woman to defend herself, it's okay for a man to defend himself. In order to have true equality, the same rules have to apply to both men and women.

Since this topic is about men hitting women, I responded as such. But I feel it does go both ways. So, women, if you get tangled with a man who thinks it is ok to hit you, walk away.

^^^^That's better. People shouldn't hit each other but they shouldn't take abuse cause the other person is a woman.
