Have you ever been put to sleep with anesthesia? Empty Have you ever been put to sleep with anesthesia?

Post by MandyPerfumeGirl Sun May 29, 2011 12:37 pm

    Hi all,

I've been put to sleep on three different occasions: once for an endoscopy (they had to put a small camera down my throat and into my stomach to see if I had an ulcer - which I didn't), once for oral surgery, and once to remove a benign tumor from my breast shortly after my 22nd birthday. You can imagine how a lump in the breast can terrify anyone!

How about everyone else? Have you ever been put to sleep with anesthesia?

A few times, yeah. Once for the removal of 4 impacted wisdom teeth-that was IV Valium I believe. The most significant being an adrenalectomy that lasted several hours. Not crazy about that one.

I have when I had my tonsils taken out, and I also have when I was getting a stye cut from underneath my eyelid. I woke up in the middle of that one. Wasn't pleasant.

    Wow!

I've been butchered, but I've never woken up during the procedure - I'm sorry that that happened!

    Lots of times for me:

7 years ago when I was 37, for varicose vein ablation in my legs,
And in the past two years I went under for:

    1. Lumpectomy right breast
    2. Mastectomy right breast
    3. Lumpectomy left breast
    4. Chemo port placement
    5. Reconstruction both boobs
    6. And a surprise D+C 3 weeks ago!

There--now that I've gotten all the old-person stuff out of the way while I'm young. .. .LOL big grin

Not as many times as Hyacinth but a few.

First time I was put under with ether for a tonsilectomy

Second time for removal of an epididymal cyst

Third time bilateral inguinal hernia repair

Fourth time repair of a spiral fracture of my tibia

Nope, I've never been to the hospital since I was born. One time when I was 13 I had my eye doctor cut a piece of rusted steel out of my eye, but I was wide awake for that, literally. He took it out in 3 pieces, and for all that I just thought I had an eyelash stuck in there by the way it felt.

How did the steel get in your eye? Or were you being literal when you said that you thought it was just a lash? I ask because my son had 3/4 of his upper lid eyelashes in his eye. And he didn't even know they were ALL in there.

I have no idea HOW it got into my eye...for about an hour I was rubbing my eye becasue it felt like I had an eyelash in it and I was trying to pull it out but nothing came, so my mother tried and still nothing, and she suggested I try washing it out, and put the eyedrops in, still nothing, so my dad took me to the eyedoctor, they ran some tests and he asked what I'd been doing because I had a piece of steel in it.

And, WHOA, I pulled out 6 at once today myself...my mom thinks you're not supposed to pull them out, but if they're poking I can't see any alternative.

My son's dad had steel in his eye, but he knew what it was when he had something happen while working. But then we went to a regular eye doc and he said we had to rush to the surgery center because it was embedded in his eye. It was so scary. Then, we got there, and it turned out that eye doc was wrong because there was steel in there, but what he thought was the embedded steel was actually just a fleck in his eye. But the eye surgeon said, "I could see why they thought it was something it was not..."

I thought that was just one doc covering another doc's ass because how the hell does an opthamologist not know the difference between a spec of color and a foreign object that is embedded?

Twice - both times for minor surgery, though I don't think I was totally out when I got my wisdom teeth, as I had a vague recollection of what was happening and was apparently talking to the dentist, so maybe I've only been out out once.

Once in the psych hospital when I was attending an ECT treatment, the psychiatrist told us to speak softly and be aware that the anaesthetized patient could hear us.

Even while drugged there is a conscious part of you. When I had my hernia op, it was in a predominantly Spanish speaking part of town and some workers didn't even speak English. My surgeon was Hispanic and I assume there was the usual banter going on around the table while they were cutting and sewing my innards.

When waking from anaesthesia you are often cold and I remember saying "muy frio" repeatedly in my fugue state. Now why would I say "very cold" in Spanish instead of English? All I can figure is I was aware of the Spanish conversation around me during surgery.

Yeah, once last year I had to go to the energency room because I got a piece of food stuck in my esophagus. They had to put me under so they could go down with a scope and dislodge it. They gave me propofol which is the same stuff that killed Michael Jackson, so I was skeptical at first, but the risk of dying (an unlikely risk) was less scary than not being able to eat food ever again.
