    GRAND RAPIDS -- An HIV-positive Comstock Park man reportedly told police he was intentionally trying to spread the the virus to as many people as possible, Kent County Health Department officials said today.

    David Dean Smith -- now charged with failure to inform a sexual partner about his health status -- also allegedly told investigators that hundreds of people may have been exposed to HIV because of him.

    Health officials today issued a public notice that said they are taking the threat seriously and want anyone who may have been exposed by Smith to contact them for HIV testing.

    "While the threat of transmission varies based on the activity, this is still an extremely serious public health concern," authorities said in the release.

    Smith, 51, came to Grand Rapids police on his own Dec. 19 to report his activity.

    "He stated he was HIV positive and had been knowingly having unprotected sex with people," police Sgt. James Potter said in a press release. "He claimed there were multiple partners but he only knew of a few victims' names."

    Smith was arraigned Dec. 24 in Grand Rapids District Court for a June 2008 sexual encounter with an unspecified victim. He is held in jail on a $25,000 bond.

    Potter said that after Smith came to police Dec. 19, he was held in a facility for psychological evaluation until his arraignment.

    Kent County health authorities said police told them that Smith admitted to injecting drugs, being sexually active and "suggested that he was intentionally trying to spread the virus."

    He told police that he met people over the Internet and that exposure may have included people outside of the area.

    Health officials say anyone concerned about whether they were exposed can call personal counselors at 632-7171 and get tested.

    They had this on Law and Order, twice. Trying to take down as many people with him as possible, that was the logic in the episodes, and probably the same one here.
