Why do men commit suicide more than women?

Seems the overwhelming majority of suicides are by men. As opposed to women. Why do you think that is?

Sometimes it being a "mans world" is a tough skylight to live up to!

I don't know that all suicides ARE suicides, I think in some of them, the people just happen to kill themselves. And statistically speaking, more men do this than women, especially men 25 and under, because they engage more in dangerous activities than women do. The way I see it, they say when you're young you're immortal, or think you are, but women generally have more sense on the matter than men do, than to try something they could break their neck doing, for whatever reason that the men do do them.

All suicides are suicides, there's a difference between reckless fatality (someone dying because they had a careless accident) and suicide (deliberately taking one's own life). Men lead the way in both.

White men especially. Why THAT is, I'd really like to know.

I think GrayWolf hit the nail on the head. There are a lot of social and communal expectations placed on men to be successful, strong, alpha, not show weakness, to protect and provide for themselves, their families, etc., etc. I imagine that when some of them don't measure up these standards, or feel like they have it in them to carry the burden to not just succeed, but to conquer, hopeless feelings of despair or failure can be too much. That's probably why we have such a high suicide rate. A man is judged by his honor, take that pride away from him and the results can be devastating for him (just look at the SEVEN gay teen boys who've committed suicide this past month because they were harassed and their self pride was stripped.)

Women are more likely to go through life being stifled and having limitations placed them, but at the same time are more regularly issued affection, reaffirmed and expected to be open about their feelings or insecurities. No one tells a 3 y/o girl who falls down not to cry.

Maybe in general, women are better able to deal with negativity. The expectations on men are huge...and women do have expectations, but they are not as direct or dire as some men seem to feel. Plus, we women are more likely to confide our ilks than our male counterparts, so we are more supported when things are not going our way.

The male ego is 5x more sensitive than the female ego, that's why. A mans reaction to not measuring up, failing, or being involved in something that destroys his reputation can be catastrophic. And spectators can be brutally unforgiving. Women's reputations generally don't hold as much expectation or weight.

Cause men usually fuck up more royally than women, therefore handling the consequences is that much more grave.

Men value independence and decisiveness, and they regard acknowledging a need for help as weakness and avoid it. Women value interdependence, and they consult friends and readily accept help. Women consider decisions in a relationship context, taking many things into consideration, and they feel freer to change their minds.

Men opt to suffer in silence (and go crazy) while Women are twice as likely to seek and accept help when they are in turmoil or make a mistake.
